Shalom Aleichem, Patterns, and Roots!

Dear Kachol Hebrew Parents (and students!)

This week we continued our in depth study of Shalom Aleichem. We have been working very hard on recognizing the patterns and what they patterns mean.

The students worked on mastering one section in groups and teaching it to the rest of the class. This really helped them to see that the prayer itself is repetitive.

We also continued our study of Hebrew roots. Each student now has a Hebrew Root Book that they keep at school. This book contains each of the roots that we learn, and all of the vocabularly words that are attached to that root. We have focused much of our learning of vocabularly on the idea that all Hebrew words come from roots that share a meaning. So far, the students have done a great job of recognizing words and figuring out what root they belong to.

For homework, I'd like to see the students continue to practice reading Shalom Aleichem at home. Please remember to have them fill out their reading raffle cards. If they need extras, they can be downloaded on the TOS website.

On a separate note, this Friday night is Shabbat Mishpacha featuring our JOSTYites (7th and 8th graders). It would be wonderful if you could join us for this wonderful Shabbat opportunity. After a service led by our 7th and 8th graders, we will join together for dinner. The next Shabbat Mishpacha, on January 21st, will actually feature our 3rd and 4th graders, so it would be great for them to see how the older partcipate before your students lead a service next month.

As always, please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Best,

Stacy

Weekly Newsletter 10-12

Hello Parents!

This week was a busy one in Kachol Hebrew! We have finally started our Hebrew Book, Journeys through the Siddur: Shabbat at Home. This week, we learned all about the importance of candles to Shabbat and holidays.

We also took a long time reviewing "roots." We began with a conversation about root words in English. The students seemed to have a very strong grasp of this concept, and how things like prefixes, and suffixes help us to form words. This led us into a conversation about how we can apply these things to Hebrew. We did a bit of "detective work" to find Hebrew roots in some words we already knew, and some that we had never heard before.

Our first lesson has the students exploring the Hebrew root for "command." This is a VERY tricky root with both a vav and a hey in it, but the students did a great job in class of finding all of the vocabularly words with this three letter root in them. For homework, they will practice reading some of these words aloud, and begin to explore the other vocabularly words from the candle blessing.

As always, please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns!

Best,

Stacy

Weekly Newsletter 10/5/10

Hebrew has been off to a great start!

We are currently working on reviewing letters and vowels. There is a lot to remember!

This week we had "Hebrew Letter Races" where we worked as a team to write letters, vowels, and words up on the board in Hebrew. There are a few letters that are still giving some of the students trouble, but for the most part, while writing the letters can be a bit tricky sometimes, their reading is excellent!

Next week we will begin with our book, Journeys through the Siddur for Friday Evening. Each week the students will have a reading assignment and an occasional written assignment to complete at home. Please make sure that your child is practicing their reading at home! It is so important for retention that they do a little bit of reading each day.

If you have any questions or concerns, I can be reached at sweinberg@ohabei.org or by calling the Temple office at 617-277-6610.

Best,

Stacy
